Today is the last day for the Use 10 Coupons Get 10 Greenbax promo at the Pig for April. So, I have been racing to use up as many coupons as I can. We won't know until next Wednesday whether they intend to continue the program. So, how much did all of this cost me? Well, I spent $117.74 total after tax. But, I received 85 Greenbax worth $127.50. So, I made $9.76 to take all of that out of the store. Seriously, a $9.76 PROFIT to take all of those groceries. And, if you aren't familiar with Greenbax, they really are as good as cash. They can be used for shopping center gift cards, movie theater tickets, and are good for $1.50 each in gas.

What Do I Do With This Stuff

When I buy large quantities of an item, I am often asked (usually by bag boys and cashiers) "What are you going to do with all that?" In the interest of keeping this blog updated I thought I would mention what I was doing today as an example.

I recently acquired 9 bags of Bob Evans hashbrowns for $.30 a bag. While I love breakfast for dinner as much as the next guy - I figured I needed to find a new use for some of these. One of my daughter's favorite recipes is Tater Tot casserole. This is a really simple dish. It is not going to win you any awards for gourmet or particularly healthy cooking, but the kids will love it.

So, Tater Tot Casserole consists of Tater Tots, Ground Beef, Cream of Mushroom Soup, and Cheddar Cheese - that's it. I substituted Hashbrowns for the Tater Tots and prepped three of these - one for tonight and two for the freezer. With $.30 Hashbrowns, $1.29 Ground Beef from Piggly Wiggly, $.55 cans of soup from Piggly Wiggly, and $1 blocks of cheddar cheese from Kroger, each casserole only sets us pack $4.13. Throw in a free Birds Eye Vegetable and you have a very inexpensive meal for a large family - and one that nobody complains about.

Deals of the Week

Not much going on these days. Publix and Bi-Lo, my two staple grocery stores, haven't had any particularly great deals. The Pig special promotion is over (though you can redeem Greenbax for free groceries this weekend). I ended up with 137 books of Greenbax and a freezer full of casseroles made from rotisserie chicken meat.

Coupons.com has a new Smuckers Uncrustable $1 off one coupon. These are on sale for $2 for the 4 pack box at Publix and are priced at $2 for the 4 pack all the time at Walmart. At a quarter a sandwich it is probably cheaper than making it yourself.

The other deal worth pointing out is that Land O Frost Premium lunchmeats are BOGO at Bi-Lo. Coupled with the $2 off one coupon found here you can pick up some decent lunchmeat for $.14 a pack. The problem is that it is on sale at Bi-Lo, who are developing a terrible track record of being out of stock on the best sale items. This is the second week in a row with this sale, so I'm hoping to get lucky. On my second visit last week trying to score this deal, I went to get a raincheck and the customer service line was over a half dozen people deep. Not worth my time - the coupon is good until 3/18 and will certainly be a good deal somewhere else before then.

Not a great week at Publix. They are starting a "Viva Italia" campaign. Look for a coupon booklet in stores. If you are not already overstocked on spaghetti sauce and pasta, this is the time. The best deals I see are:

I have been hyping the Pig for two weeks but have only just discovered the most amazing deals of all. For whatever reason, it has not occurred to me that you could use a manufacturer coupon on an item that you are getting for free when you redeem Greenbax. Why would you want to do this? Those 18 books are worth $27 in free groceries at the end of the month, so it is like spending $23.03 or 83% off. Also, this isn't just catching pantry staples when they are at the lowest price. For $23.03, in addition to all the other groceries, I have stocked the freezer with 8 angus ribeyes and bought 4 rotisserie chickens.

The Rotisserie chicken deal is particularly amazing. A $1 off Tyson deli chicken coupon is attached to all the deli chickens. When you check out tell the cashier that you want to use Greenbax for the chicken. This will deduct one Greenbax from your account and knock the price down to $1.99. Then use the $1.00 manufacturer coupon which will reduce the price to $.99 and return a Greenbax to your account. Voila, $.99 rotisserie chicken. One of the best deals ever. I first saw mention of this deal over at Southern Savers in the discussion about the Pig's deals this week.

Piggly Wiggly - Use 10 Get 10 - Round One

Today was the first day of Piggly Wiggly's new Use 10 Get 10 promotion. For every 10 manufacturer's coupons you redeem you receive 10 Greenbax (limit 10 per "visit" - I haven't tested whether you can do this multiple times in a day yet). February 26-28 will be Greenbax Days which allows you to redeem up to 10 Greenbax per transaction for $1.50 each ($15 total per transaction) toward any purchase (this can be done multiple times a day). I am happy to report that everything rang up properly and my store had no problems accepting internet printable coupons.

In addition to the Greenbax days at the end of the month, Piggly Wiggly is also running some pretty nice specials this week. You have to be careful when redeeming your Greenbax. Make sure you are never getting less than $1.50 per Greenbax and, even with Greenbax money - don't pay more for something than you would elsewhere.

Total out of pocket was $10.42 and I received 10 books of Greenbax. There are a couple of particularly good Greenbax deals worth mentioning this week. The first is 10 - 12 oz individual Ribeyes for $1.99 with one Greenbax. I consider $5.99 a great price for Ribeyes, so a 12 oz ribeye for $4.50 is a good deal in my book. At that price, the 1 Greenbax is worth close to $2.50 - an excellent value. I plan to stock up throughout the week. The second is $1.99 for Deli Rotisserie Chickens with 1 Greenbax. $6.99 seems to be the going rate for Deli Chickens these days, so this puts your value up around $5 for a single Greenbax. I plan to buy a few of these - one to have that night, one to make chicken pilau, and a couple to pull meat and freeze.

In anticipation of the upcoming Greenbax promotion, I cleaned out my Greenbax books this weekend. I had just over 30 books which was worth $45 in groceries during Greenbax days. Occasionally some promotions can make your Greenbax worth $2 or more, but $1.50 is a pretty good redemption rate. The trick is to make sure you are buying well priced groceries. Earning $45 in store credit then buying a bunch of items at twice what you would have payed elsewhere is not effective.

Piggly Wiggly New Promotion

Southern Savers let it leak yesterday that there would be an announcement about a new promotion at Piggly Wiggly of the Carolinas. As a fan of the Pig, I have scoured the interwebs and think I have found the deal. Articles at The Progressive Grocer and The Times and Democrat from Orangeburg seem to have the story.

Beginning in February, Piggly Wiggly customers will receive one full greenbax for every coupon redeemed - limit 10 per visit. They will also have Greenbax Days Feb 26 to Feb 28 where 10 greenbax can be redeemed for $15 toward groceries.

This should put The Pig squarely into the mix as a great choice for couponers. I may even begin trying to do a full coupon matchup each week if no one else fills the void.

I used six $2 off Pampers Target store coupons and six $2 off Pampers manufacturers coupons. This brought my price down to $4.99 a pack or $29.94 before the $10 gift card. After the gift card, I paid $19.94 or $3.32 a pack for Pampers Jumbo pack diapers.

I also picked up some Coke products which are on sale for $2.75. I used five $1 off manufacturer coupons I got by signing up with RecycleBank to pay $1.75 a piece.

I discovered a CVS today with an actual clearance section. I have two CVS stores that I normally shop. You can find a $1 printable coupon for Toaster Pastries here. There is a $.50/1 G2 coupon from the 1/10 Red Plum insert.

Piggly Wiggly has country ribs on sale for $0.99. Last time they were on special I bought 8 lbs. They lasted three nights and were easily the most popular thing I've made in a long time. So, I will definitely be stocking up this time.

At Bi-Lo you can pick up some Shedd's Spread for free with a printable coupon from here. It is BOGO at $1.99 and the coupon doubles to $1. Take two coupons and stock up. I'm still flush with butter from all the I Can't Believe It's Not Butter sales though.

CVS - January 26, 2010

I am a little disappointed in CVS this week. CVS are easily my favorite in the drugstore group (Rite Aid a distant second and I have completely written off Walgreens altogether). I was excited that they had extended their Pepsi promotion this week. The deal is, if you buy $20 of Pepsi products (including Gatorades, Stacy's Chips, Lays, Tostitos, etc...) you get $10 back in extra bucks. There are some minor sale prices to go along with that, but the $10 back makes it essentially half price if you use your points right. Add some $5 off $20 coupons and you can really make a killing. However, as of today (three full days into the sale period), the stores do not properly have the Tostitos chips linked to the promotion in their computers nor do they have the price set as advertised in their circular. I had mentioned this sale to my mother and she had difficulty yesterday. I thought surely they would have the problem fixed by now or would be aware of the problem and be prepared to make the correction. So, after already stocking up on sodas last week I was really only interested in the Tostitos chips today. I bought 5 bags of Tostitos chips and 1 jar of Tostitos salsa. Total should have been $20.49 - $3.50 each for chips and $2.99 for salsa. The chips were rang up $3.99 so I had to get a sales adjustment. After that, the Extra Bucks did not print. After more deliberation and explanation than I cared for (I hate when I know more about a stores policies and specials than the manager) I got my extra bucks. I used a $3 off $15 coupon and previous $10 ECB and paid a little over $7 out of pocket for 5 bags of chips and a salsa. Just be prepared, if you go to hit this special, to watch the register real carefully. On a final note - while the circular says this ECB deal is limit one, rumor has it you can do up to four times.

Wonka Valentine's Day Card Kits

So, there seems to be some misleading information making the rounds of the deal blogs. Target has a special this week on Wonka brand Valentine kits - the kind your kids pass out at school. They are on special for $3 (something like a whopping $.39 off). Almost every blog in my daily surf is reporting that this can be paired with a $1.00 of coupon that can be found here (sort by food then scroll through a few pages) and result in $2 Valentine kits for your kids. Well, I found out the hard way that this is incorrect. The coupon clearly states and has a picture of a "Mini Gift Exchange Kit." This is not the same as the items on special at Target. This coupon does not scan for those products. You may be able to get a cashier to force it through, but that is on your conscience. The actual Mini Gift Exchange kits cost $5.99 and are in the full Valentine section at Target.

Made an extra rare trip to K-Mart tonight. They are running a special on Post Cereals - $2 a box. This goes perfectly with the $2 coupon available here. You have to sign up for their newsletter at the bottom of the page. So I was able to pick up 2 boxes of Post Raisin Bran for Free!

While I was there, I found boxes of Triscuits marked down to $1.50 per box. The sell by date is Feb 24 - and there is no way any amount of Triscuits will last more than three weeks in this house. I had a $1 off any Nabisco coupon and a $1 of two boxes of Wheat Thins or Triscuits coupon.

Final total for this trip was $2.59 for 2 Boxes of Raisin Bran and 3 Boxes of Triscuits.

Between a busy weekend and a stomach bug sweeping through our home, things have been a little slow and updates have fallen behind. This past weekend there was a small amount of shopping.

I had been looking for awhile for a CVS that had any of the Soy Joy 6 packs in stock. Apparently the secret is to go a store in a sketchier part of downtown. They were stocked on all of the bonus deals. So, I started with $11 in ECBs and got six 6-packs of Soy Joy bars for $1.36 out of pocket and left with with $12 in ECBs. Not too shabby.

I love the Pillsbury Bake Off. Not only can you find some great new recipes that can be made on the cheap, but there are often a lot of sales on Pillsbury products at the same time. This year was no exception with Kroger putting several Pillsbury rolls and biscuits on sale last week. I am hoping for some more good sales in the coming weeks. The above pictured Cheesy Ham and Apple Cups were a hit this weekend. I'm also looking forward to trying Chipotle-Chicken Sandwiches, Featherlight Cheddar Ranch Puffs, and Zesty Lime Fish Tacos.

I hadn't hit CVS this week because, other than the Green Bag Tag deal, they didn't really have anything all that exciting.

But, the new $10 in ECBs back with $20 in Pepsi purchases that started last night was enough to get me out early. Especially since we have been out of sodas for the better part of the week. That shouldn't be a problem anytime in the near future. I ended up going to three different CVS locations because I was also in search of more Soy Joy bars. I never did have any luck with that.

So, I started my trip with $5 in ECBs, three $5 off $20 CVS coupons, one $4 off $20 CVS email, and a few manufacturer coupons. Here is how everything went down:

Since we definitely would have purchased and used soda, we can also look at as having paid $2 a piece for fifteen 12-packs of soda and having gotten everything else for free.

A couple of notes: Though they were marked as 2 for $6 at all three stores I visited, the Stacy's Bagel Chips were actually only $2.62. This couple possible mess with your total if you are trying to get $20 exactly for the $10 back ECB deal. The strange thing is that for me, in my final transaction, it did mess up my total. I only ended up with $19.74 in Pepsi products. My Extra Bucks summary shows that I have only spent $19.74 and need another .26 to get the $10 EB. But, it still printed my $10 ECB. The circular this week is somewhat misleading about the Pepsi deal. It could easily be interpreted that you can get $10 on $20 in Pepsi 12 packs (limit two) AND get $10 on $20 on Pepsi and Frito Lay products (limit two). This is not the case. Limit two per card, you can get $10 back for every $20 you spend on any Pepsi/Frito Lay products - period. Found this out the hard way on my third transaction but still think it was a good deal. Also, I could have gotten my total out of pocket down a little further with some more Stacy's coupon, and another $5 off CVS coupon. Finally, I'll be able to submit for a $15 Coors Light/Pepsi rebate. It would kind of be cheating to apply it towards the cost of this purchase since it still requires the purchase of an 18 pack of Coors Light. But, someone in my poker club brings Coors Light every week and I intend to snag his receipt and UPC next time. So, if I am in fact able to get that rebate without spending anything else out of pocket, I would get the total cost of this purchase down to $15.67.

Couple of tips - the site has some buggy flash animation and I was never able to get to the coupons using Firefox. Try it in IE, but if you have pop up blockers enabled it is going to boot you back to the registration screen when you try to print it. Piggly Wiggly - January 8, 2010

I love Piggly Wiggly. They get very little attention in the mommy blog / coupon blog universe. I believe this has mostly to do with the large variations in their circulars from town to town. But, they consistently have the best sale prices on meat. And, they also have the best selection of "local" produce of any of the large chain grocery stores. Unlike Bi-Lo and Publix, who are willing to advertise anything grown anywhere in the Southeast as local to South Carolina, Piggly Wiggly seems to make an effort to work with actual local farmers. I try to buy most of my produce at farmers markets during the summer, but the McBee Peaches at Piggly Wiggly are as good as any you will find anywhere and priced for bulk purchasing (I made peach salsas, BBQ sauces, pies, and crisps this past summer).

The down side to Piggly Wiggly is that they don't double coupons - at least not at my store. And they don't run the same number of Buy One Get Ones as Publix or Bi-Lo. Not doing those two things really limits the number of free and super cheap deals. Plus, the only one convenient to me is at least 20 years old and has a hard time competing in the selection and cleanliness departments. But, the entire rest of the industry could take a lesson or two from the Pig when it comes to friendliness and customer service.

Anyway, today was a quick trip for meat. January 7th through 10th they have a 4 day sale on ground beef for $1.29 a pound. This is a fantastic price. They are also running BOGO on country style ribs. So, today's haul was 10.51 pounds of ground beef and 8 pounds of country ribs for $24.62. Based on regular store prices this was a savings of $27.70 or 53% off.

Harris Teeter - January 7, 2010

So, my coupon thing has reached a twisted new level. Around 10:00 a.m. this morning I decided to make the trek to the Rock Hill and Fort Mill area Harris Teeters. This was about 120 miles round trip. But, we no longer have Harris Teeter here in Columbia, and I was not about to miss out on Super Double Deals running January 6th through the 12th. I still miss having a Harris Teeter and especially miss the old triple coupon deals they used to run (though I don't think they do that much anymore).

The picture above is what I picked up. The grand total was $152.52 in groceries for $35.38. A savings of $117.14 or 77% off. Not too shabby, even if I did burn about $20 bucks in gas.
